Since Wii Homebrew Review broke this story a couple of weeks ago there has been some interesting developments. We first discovered a "DVDx" Installer reported to be compatible with Nintendo Wii System 3.4 through a tip that was sent to us through YouTube. After exploring the tip and its reported source we discovered that the rumoured DVDx Installer for Wii system 3.4 was indeed real but not really DVDx. Confused yet?
So here is the deal, but first a brief recap for those just exploring the Wii as a DVD player for the first time:
"It has now been confirmed that DVD playback is available through Homebrew for any Nintendo Wii with the October 23rd system update.
The Homebrew community had managed to unleash the Wii's DVD drive for DVD playback prior to the 3.4 update. Unfortunately the system update that Nintendo released on October 23rd, 2008 had made it impossible to install the DVDx Homebrew on any system that was updated. Wii Homebrew Review discovered that there is a confirmed DVDx installer now available through the forums on http://www.wiibrew.org that works with system 3.4."
This latest attempt at unlocking the Wii's DVD drive has become pretty big news for the world of Wii homebrew largely because having a working version of DVDx on your Wii is the only way to unlock the Wii's optical drive. Without this hack you can't play DVD movies, back-up copies of games, or use disks for any purpose other than playing official Wii disks (boring). The new "DVDx" Installer is in fact, not a DVDx Installer at all since it was in no way connected to Team Twiizers. It does however do what DVDx does.
Is this an unofficial version of DVDx or something else entirely that simply does the same job? That is yet to be determined. The important thing is that it is out there and it is reportedly working on Wii's everywhere.
Once again it is important for you to know that Wii Homebrew Review only intends this article for information purposes only and we can not and will not officially recommend installing this new "DVDx" Installer until it is universally recognized by the Homebrew Community.
